Freud's Interpretation

It was Freud's trail-blazing insight that madness has meaning. Assuming a negative Oedipal constellation, Freud based the pathogenesis of Schreber's entire illness on one premise: a core conflict of a passive homosexual wish toward Flechsig, manifest already in Schreber's prodromal fantasy about what a woman feels in intercourse, before any personal dealings with Flechsig. Similarly, he interpreted soul murder, which occurred months after admission, as a sexual wish transformed into a delusion of persecution. The text follows.
