Schreber's Illness

Paul Schreber had three depressive illnesses and hospitalizations in his life, all three following real and symbolic losses: at 42, a defeat at the polls; at 51, a stillborn boy and promotion to Senatspräsident; at 65, mother's death and wife's stroke. He functioned normally after the first neurotic depression; and between the second and third severe psychotic depressions, during which time he adopted and raised lovingly an adolescent girl.
